Hi, New guy here, I recently acquired a nice 1966 Bonneville. I am thinking of restoring it. Have decent mechanical skills, but many questions about the British Standard fasteners on it. I took a look at the link to the "Black Book". Couldn't tell if it identified British Standard or not. Is there a good reference for me? Thank you:confused:
I have the fastener black book and you wouldnt have to buy a copy to be able to ID the British bolts on your bike.
For starters, use this tapping drill chart:
http://www.britishfasteners.com/images/nuts_bolts_key.pdf
Page 2 of the chart shows the difference between BSW/BSF hardware and UNC/UNF hardware.
Next, you will find one of these VERY helpful:

Lastly, use this reference to differentiate between all of the British threads:
http://www.britishfasteners.com/threads/index.html
The easiest thing to remember is that ALL of them can be ID'd by measuring two things
1.) Measure the thread diameter. British thread systems use more common inch increments like 1/4", 5/16" etc
2.) Count the number of threads in 1 inch.
This will give you an answer like (example) 5/16"- 22. Then by using the PDF file above, you can determing that you require a BSF (British Standard Fine) 5/16"-22 bolt or nut
